Do One Thing. Do It Well. Repeat.
The sun is a powerful source of energy with billions of kilowatts pouring from it each hour. Every day we enjoy its light; and when the light’s too bright, we shade it with a hat and some sunglasses.
A laser, by contrast to the sun, is a weak source or energy, only a few watts. Yet lasers have been used to drill holes in diamonds and cut dangerous cancer cells.
The difference? Focus. When laser light is channeled in a concentrated stream, it’s potent and powerful.
What does this mean for small business?
Most small businesses try to do too much. They do one thing for one customer one week, another thing for another customer the next, never specializing with one kind of customer or one kind of service.
Small businesses do this under the grave misconception that this what they need to do to survive. It does just the opposite. It diffuses their energy, their light if you will, requiring nothing more than a hat to ignore them.
“The primary reason for a small company’s failure is trying to do to many different things at once. If you do one thing, and do it well, you can build a reputation that almost guarantees success in the long run,” marketing guru, Al Ries, states in his book entitled simply, Focus.
What’s your one thing? Find it. Focus all your energy on it. Repeat.
